The World Cup is bringing together two potential 2028 presidential candidates in the same box at Friday’s U.S. opener against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are expected to sit within close proximity of each other at kickoff at SoFi Stadium, a pairing that could replicate itself again on the debate stage if both come for the presidency.
“The Governor is there to support Team USA. Any frame-mogging that occurs will be purely incidental,” said an official familiar with the governor’s plans who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on his behalf on the matter.
