The Government of the State of Veracruz confirmed the death of Morena federal deputy Zenyazen Escobar García, whose body was found this Friday, September 4, inside his vehicle on the Veracruz-Xalapa federal highway, near the town of La Gloria.
According to initial reports, the legislator was found inside the vehicle—which was parked on the highway shoulder—bearing gunshot wounds. No other injured persons or victims associated with the attack were reported at the scene.
State Attorney General Lisbeth Aurelia Jiménez Aguirre confirmed the death and detailed that the investigative team—comprising forensic experts, Ministerial Police agents, and prosecutors—was deployed to the scene to collect evidence and compile the corresponding investigation file.
Meanwhile, Veracruz Government Secretary Ricardo Ahued Bardahuil announced that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) would take over the case in coordination with the state prosecutor’s office to strengthen the investigation and clarify the facts. The official noted that the vehicle showed no signs of a collision and stated that all lines of inquiry would be pursued.
Zenyazen Escobar García previously served as a teachers’ union leader and as the head of the Veracruz Secretariat of Education during the administration of former Governor Cuitláhuac García Jiménez. On September 1, he had attended the Congress of the Union headquarters for the opening of the legislative session.
Federal and state security forces are maintaining a perimeter around the area while forensic procedures are concluded.
