The seizure of methamphetamine on the streets of the nation’s capital places this drug among the most sold by criminal groups that have been distributing it at the retail level since 2018, when a meth lab was discovered.
Currently, for the dominant organizations, it is the third most sold narcotic in the capital, along with marijuana and cocaine, although some reports also indicate the emergence of crystal meth. According to the most recent security report, from October 5, 2024, to May 31, 2026, authorities seized 92.6 kilograms of this drug.
In fact, in previous reports, methamphetamine seizures ranked third in the entire capital. Its sale has become widespread at the retail level, as the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has recently arrested street-level drug dealers with doses of this drug in the western, eastern, and central parts of the capital.
According to the data consulted, the largest quantities of methamphetamine have been seized in raids on criminal groups that store it on properties alongside other drugs. In April of this year, the Secretary of Security, Pablo Vázquez, reported that, in terms of combating the sale and distribution of drugs, as of March 31 of this year, 92 kilos of methamphetamine had already been seized.
Like other drugs, it enters the capital from the Pacific coast, according to reports, and remains in the central area. In April 2025 alone, Mexico City and federal authorities located Joel Alfonso Urrea Yariar, alias “El Gangoso,” in Azcapotzalco. He was the leader of a criminal cell originating from Culiacán, Sinaloa, and linked to the Los Mayos faction of the Pacific Cartel.
This cell, based in Puebla, was dedicated to the production and distribution of synthetic drugs. This cell manufactured synthetic drugs in clandestine laboratories located in Sinaloa and Puebla, near Chachapa. With the presence of this criminal leader, it was discovered that drugs such as crystal meth and methamphetamine were also being distributed in the Mexico City market, where there are consumers.
Upon their arrest, authorities seized a handgun, a magazine, nine rounds of ammunition, a plastic bag containing methamphetamine, a tablet, two IDs, cash, and cell phones. Just in October 2025, the SSC raided four properties in Iztapalapa, Álvaro Obregón, and Miguel Hidalgo, where they found 600 doses of methamphetamine, as well as marijuana and cocaine. On June 21, the arrest of four drug dealers in Miguel Hidalgo was also reported. They were carrying methamphetamine but were linked to the theft of high-end watches in the western part of the city.
