What is the origin of the hantavirus outbreak?
On May 2, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) was notified of a group of passengers aboard a cruise ship who were suffering from a severe respiratory illness.
Experts from the organization have gathered various pieces of information—including epidemiological data—leading them to operate under the assumption that the initial transmission occurred through contact with some type of rodent, or its excrement or saliva, and that this exposure took place *before* the infected individual or individuals boarded the cruise ship.
To reach this conclusion, they took into account the virus’s incubation period (ranging from one to six weeks). Based on this, they are currently working with a primary hypothesis suggesting that the initial point of contamination was in Argentina, where the individuals who subsequently fell ill originally boarded the ship.
