The campus formerly known as César Chavez Elementary in El Sereno is now presenting itself as Oakland Street Elementary School, one of the most visible changes taking place as Los Angeles Unified moves forward with its school renaming process.
The change is already visible on the school’s official LAUSD website. The homepage identifies the school as Oakland Street Elementary and welcomes families to its new online home. It also tells visitors to update their bookmarks while still displaying the former web address, cesarchavezes.lausd.org.
The school is located at 5243 Oakland St. in Los Angeles and lists Sandra Arellano as its principal. Current announcements on the site are also being published under the Oakland Street Elementary name as the 2026 to 27 school year begins.
The transition did not happen overnight.
Earlier this year, the school was already informing parents about the renaming process. A school announcement invited families and the community to attend a meeting about renaming the school, and another notice asked parents to help choose a new name.
By the summer, the school’s public identity had changed.
That makes the El Sereno campus an unusually clear example of how a name change can move from a district decision into the daily lives of families. Parents looking for school information online are now directed to Oakland Street Elementary, while older references to César Chavez remain visible in parts of the district’s digital system.
