The Mexican president firmly responded to statements by U.S. ambassador nominee Ronald Johnson, who did not rule out military action against drug cartels in Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected the notion of U.S. military intervention in Mexico following remarks by Ronald Johnson, President Trump’s nominee for U.S. ambassador to Mexico. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Johnson suggested that “all cards are on the table” concerning actions against Mexican drug cartels, including potential unilateral military measures if American lives are at risk.
In response, President Sheinbaum stated that such military interventions are unequivocally unacceptable and violate Mexico’s sovereignty. She emphasized that these actions are “not on the table, nor on the chair, nor on the floor, nor anywhere,” underscoring that collaboration between the two nations must occur within a framework of mutual respect and adherence to sovereignty.
Previously, President Trump had designated several Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a move that heightened tensions between the two countries. President Sheinbaum has consistently opposed any form of foreign intervention, asserting that the Mexican people will not accept actions that compromise the nation’s integrity, independence, or sovereignty.
As of now, there has been no official response from President Trump or his administration regarding President Sheinbaum’s recent remarks. The situation remains delicate, with both nations navigating complex issues related to security, sovereignty, and bilateral cooperation.
“You’re Tough,” said President Trump to Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President.
