On Wednesday, April 29, the U.S. Department of Justice announced formal indictments against multiple current and former Mexican public officials, including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and nine others, for alleged drug trafficking offenses, weapons related crimes, and ties to the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel known as “Los Chapitos.”

What Are the U.S. Allegations Against Mexican Officials?

According to the official document released by the U.S. Department of Justice via the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the indictment includes charges for drug trafficking and weapons related offenses. It alleges that the individuals involved collaborated directly with the criminal organization to smuggle large quantities of narcotics into U.S. territory.

The Department of Justice asserts that the defendants “partnered” with leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate the trafficking of drugs such as fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine into the United States.

Investigations suggest that these operations were sustained through networks of institutional corruption, in which public officials provided political, operational, and security protection in exchange for bribes and support from the criminal group.

Furthermore, one of the defendants faces additional charges for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of a DEA source and a relative. This escalates the gravity of the case by involving direct violence against informants.

The case file names ten individuals, all of whom held significant positions within government or security institutions in Sinaloa. Among them are:

Rubén Rocha Moya, Governor of the State of Sinaloa
Enrique Inzunza Cázarez, Senator and former Secretary General
Enrique Díaz Vega, former Secretary of Finance
Dámaso Castro Saavedra, Deputy Prosecutor
Marco Antonio Almanza Avilés, former Police Chief
Alberto Jorge Contreras Núñez, former Police Commander
Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, former Secretary of Public Security
José Antonio Dionisio Hipólito, former Deputy Police Director
Juan de Dios Gámez Mendívil, Mayor of Culiacán
Juan Valenzuela Millán, former Municipal Commander
