The supply of temporary Airbnb accommodations increased by 896 percent from 2025 to 2026 in the Tlalpan borough, in anticipation of the World Cup that begins on June 11 at Banorte Stadium.

According to data from Inside Airbnb, in 2025 there were 77 registered accommodations in the Tlalpan borough; as of the end of April 2026, there are 767 active listings. This represents 690 homes that joined the platform to offer lodging and accommodation.

Another borough adjacent to this sports center is Coyoacán, which currently has 1,691 active accommodations, but that’s only two more than the previous year.

The reason for this boom is clear: five matches will be played at Banorte Stadium, including the tournament’s opening match on July 11. The remaining matches on June 17, 24, 30, and July 5 will also be played.

The town of Santa Úrsula Xitla, located near the Banorte Stadium, has no rental listings. However, Airbnb offers numerous options, such as an apartment that can be rented for 12,816 pesos for four nights. After the World Cup, the same four-night rental for the same apartment, which is a single-level unit with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a kitchen, would cost 3,166 pesos.

In an interview with SinEmbargo’s Data Unit, Carla Escoffié, a lawyer and activist, pointed out that events like the World Cup or the Olympic Games intensify and exacerbate Airbnb’s lobbying efforts, as well as the effects of overtourism and gentrification.
