Fernando Guzmán rushed to his daughter’s defense when four armed men burst into their home in Nanchital, Veracruz, in the early hours of June 2. They beat him, handcuffed him, and threw him to the floor. The last thing he heard before losing consciousness was Roxana’s scream: “Don’t hurt my dad!”
More than 24 hours after her abduction, journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez remains missing, and her father—who ended up hospitalized due to the beating—has a single message for her captors.
“Give me back my daughter. She hasn’t done anything to you. If being a journalist puts everyone at risk, then eventually there won’t be any journalists left,” Fernando Guzmán told the cameras of *Milenio*. The family has confirmed that, so far, the attackers have not demanded any ransom.
The kidnapping took place in a country that Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranked as the second-deadliest nation for the press in 2025, trailing only Palestine. That year, nine journalists were murdered in Mexico—the highest figure in three years—and the country ranked second globally for the disappearance of media professionals, with 28 cases, surpassed only by Syria, with 37.
