Former beauty queen Carolina Flores Gómez was murdered in an apartment in Polanco on April 15.

The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident under the femicide protocol and has identified the victim’s mother-in-law, Erika Herrera, as the primary suspect.

Carolina’s mother, Reyna Gómez Molina, stated that her daughter’s husband delayed reporting the crime in order to protect the couple’s young son, while authorities continue to search for the alleged perpetrator, who remains at large.

The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation file for intentional homicide—applying the femicide protocol—on April 16, following the receipt of the formal report, which was filed one day after the crime took place.

Erika Herrera—mother of Alejandro Sánchez, who is Carolina’s husband and the father of her child—is listed as the alleged perpetrator of the attack. Carolina’s mother, Reyna Gómez Molina, revealed to the Univision network that it was Alejandro himself who informed her of the death—one day after the incident occurred—and explained that he had decided to wait in order to care for their baby, who is just eight months old.
