On April 14, 2026, the Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance (SABG) initiated a formal investigation against Jenaro Villamil Rodríguez, head of the Mexican State Public Broadcasting System (SPR), regarding alleged administrative irregularities and the handling of public funds. The audit was triggered following a series of inconsistencies detected in the management of the *Infodemia* platform and the dissemination of information that proved to be inaccurate concerning national security events.
Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, head of the Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance (SABG), confirmed that the administrative proceeding seeks to clarify the use of the budget allocated to the SPR during the 2025 fiscal year and the current year to date (2026). According to the federal agency’s guidelines, the investigation will focus on the potential failure to observe information verification protocols and the awarding of direct contracts for the operation of digital tools within the structure of the public media system.
This legal process comes weeks after—in March 2026—the *Infodemia* platform issued a public apology for labeling as false a news report regarding a security incident at the National Palace facilities in Mexico City. The state-run platform’s error was highlighted after President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed the veracity of the events during a press conference, which raised questions regarding the objectivity and editorial rigor of the unit led by Villamil Rodríguez.
“Transparency in public media is a fundamental pillar for this Administration, and failures regarding the veracity of information delivered to the citizenry will not be tolerated,” declared Buenrostro Sánchez regarding the commencement of the inquiries. For her part, the President of the Republic stated on April 15, 2026, that her government maintains an absolute commitment to accountability and that the head of the SPR must present the necessary evidence to address the observations raised by the audit.
