A U.S. citizen from California is among the people still hospitalized after a driver plowed into a crowd celebrating Mexico’s World Cup victory in Cabo San Lucas, authorities confirmed Thursday.

The incident left 17 people injured after a vehicle accelerated into pedestrians gathered on Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas, a popular tourist area where hundreds of fans had gathered following Mexico’s win over the Czech Republic. Local police said the driver suddenly accelerated after his vehicle became surrounded by people blocking the roadway and placing pressure on the car.

According to the Los Cabos city government, six people remain hospitalized, including a 48-year-old U.S. woman from Santa Cruz, California. The driver is also hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from the vehicle and assaulted by members of the crowd following the crash. Authorities have not released the identities of the injured.

The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to determine exactly how the incident unfolded and establish responsibility. Officials are also asking the public to provide videos or photographs that could assist investigators.
