The Tequila, Jalisco, City Council appointed Lorena Marisol Rodríguez Rivera as interim mayor following the arrest of Diego Rivera Navarro, who faces accusations of leading an extortion and corruption ring within the municipal government.
On the evening of February 8, the Tequila City Council held an extraordinary session to determine the succession to the mayoralty. The session, convened at 9:00 p.m., lasted approximately 15 minutes.
The vote was by roll call and reflected the internal polarization: six votes in favor, three against, and one abstention. After being sworn in, Lorena Marisol Rodríguez Rivera formally assumed the position.
In her first address as interim mayor, Rodríguez Rivera emphasized: “Our municipality is experiencing times that demand character, unity, and a clear direction. The families of Tequila want stability, work, and results, and that is what we will guarantee them.”
Lorena Marisol Rodríguez Rivera holds a degree in Business Administration from the Mario Molina Pasquel y Enríquez Technological Institute, which she obtained in 2015.
Between 2019 and 2024, she worked at the Ministry of Welfare, where she participated in census activities and provided direct assistance to the population through federal social programs.
As a councilwoman for the Morena party, she served on the Citizen Participation, Health, Hygiene, and Addiction Prevention Committee, actively participating in the administrative and social life of the municipality.
Rodríguez Rivera is considered a close associate of Diego Rivera Navarro, with whom she shared management and political activism within the same ruling group.
The appointment of the new interim mayor comes amidst a context of high institutional tension, following the arrest of Diego Rivera Navarro and three of his closest officials—Juan Manuel “N”, Director of Public Security; Juan Gabriel “N”, Director of Cadastre and Property Tax; and Isaac “N”, Director of Public Works—, all accused of having operated a systematic scheme of extortion and abuse of power from the city hall.
