Tom Cruise transforms into an oil tycoon for his first collaboration with Alejandro González Iñárritu in *Digger*, a Warner Bros. dark comedy hitting theaters on October 1; the first trailer was released this Monday.
The actor plays Digger Rockwell, a Southern billionaire with a prominent belly, thinning white hair, and a Southern U.S. accent—a character described in the film as “the most powerful man in the world.”
His company triggers an ecological disaster of global proportions—the accelerated melting of a Greenland glacier—that threatens to escalate into a nuclear conflict.
“I’ve never had anything that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro,” Cruise told the press, critics, and fans gathered at a special event at the Warner Bros. studios in Los Angeles.
The character shares traits with figures Cruise has explored in the past. “Whether it’s Les Grossman [in *Tropic Thunder*], *Interview with the Vampire*, *Collateral*, or *Risky Business*, I always ask myself: ‘How do I convey this?’ The physicality, the makeup—that’s something you discover,” the actor explained.
