U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized nearly 94 pounds of methamphetamine on July 5 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
According to reports, the shipment—consisting of 71 packages with a total weight of approximately 42.6 kilograms—was found concealed within the doors and side panels of a 2014 Nissan Versa.
U.S. authorities state that the drugs have an estimated street value of $150,240.
The screening took place after a density meter detected unusually high readings in the vehicle’s structure, prompting a secondary inspection. Subsequently, a specialized canine unit alerted officers to the presence of narcotics, and a non-intrusive imaging system confirmed anomalies within the vehicle.
During the physical inspection, officers confirmed the drugs were hidden in the rear side panels and the doors.
San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marín noted that “this was not a stroke of luck, but the result of diligent, multi-layered enforcement efforts.”
The official added that the combination of agent observation, canine unit support, and specialized technology enabled the detection of the shipment.
The vehicle’s driver, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested and will face federal prosecution for offenses related to the importation of narcotics. In addition to the drugs, authorities seized the car, a GPS tracker, and two cellphones used in the operation.
