Thousands of red roses, rooster figurines, and ribbons bearing messages of love reportedly covered the grave of Rubén Oseguera Cervantes—alias “El Mencho”—this Sunday, in what appeared to be a family tribute on Father’s Day.
Images circulated on social media on June 21 showed the burial site of the former leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who was killed in February 2026 following a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
Notably, some of the floral arrangements were signed “JP”—the nickname of Juan Carlos Valencia, who reportedly took over as leader of the Jalisco-based cartel.
The black headstone marking the site where the famous gold-colored coffin—valued at thousands of pesos—was interred bears Oseguera Cervantes’ full name and the dates 1966–2026. The epitaph describes him as “the best father, husband, grandfather, and brother”—making no reference to his criminal life—and concludes with a phrase associated with Emiliano Zapata: “It is better to die on one’s feet than to live a lifetime on one’s knees.”
