On Wednesday, June 3, it was revealed that thirteen of the 92 drug traffickers who were expelled from Mexico and transferred to the United States (US) between 2025 and 2026 have formally requested consular assistance from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs—an agency headed by Roberto Velasco Álvarez—to be repatriated and tried in Mexico.
Among the drug traffickers who submitted this request are six alleged operatives of Los Zetas, a criminal organization whose case in US courts is proceeding simultaneously with the prosecution of its former top leaders: the brothers Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales—known as “El Z-40” and “El Z-42,” respectively.
The attorney for the alleged drug traffickers, Marco Antonio Avilés Huerta, submitted the written request to the Foreign Ministry on June 3, 2026—according to information from the Tijuana-based media outlet *Zeta*—and questioned why the Mexican government afforded due process to Rubén Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa currently on leave, but denied it to his clients, who face charges for crimes similar to those of the MORENA politician.
“Today, we are denouncing the fact that the Mexican government permitted precisely the kind of interventionism that, at this very moment, they are so loudly proclaiming we must not allow,” the attorney declared upon leaving the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.
