Since 5:00 a.m. this Monday, April 27, 2026, dozens of residents from Punta de Mita and neighboring communities have completely blocked vehicular traffic. The peaceful demonstration is strategically concentrated at the intersection leading toward Higuera Blanca, effectively paralyzing traffic on this vital thoroughfare in the state of Nayarit.
The Origin of the Environmental Conflict in Paradise
The intense protest erupted following the complete breakdown of negotiations between citizens, local authorities, and a real estate development company. Protesters publicly allege that construction work on a massive stone wall is destroying the natural environment and blocking free access to the well-known Playa Las Cocinas.
In addition to the evident ecological damage to the coastline, residents are demanding immediate solutions to the severe shortage of potable water in their homes. They argue that while the large, luxury resort complexes of Bahía de Banderas enjoy unlimited water resources, local communities suffer from a constant supply shortage—a situation that has finally exhausted the people’s patience.
Given the scale of the blockade, Municipal President Héctor Santana quickly traveled to the site, accompanied by Civil Protection personnel and several ambulances. His primary objective is to safeguard the physical safety of those present and to establish an urgent dialogue table aimed at clearing the highway without the need to deploy public force.
