Dr. Jesús Luján is currently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, California. According to official records, his case was opened on October 14, while in Mexico, he has an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City since December 2024 for the crime of “attempted medical malpractice.”

The doctor’s case gained public attention in 2023, following a journalistic investigation published in the media outlet Animal Político, where 14 women denounced medical malpractice committed by Luján, including administering medications without consent, performing unnecessary surgeries, withholding medical records, causing serious complications in patients, and even the death of newborns. The documented cases date back to 2006 and revealed a pattern of allegedly negligent and abusive conduct in the gynecologist’s professional practice. As a result, a group of women formed the collective Con Ovarios (With Ovaries), which gathered dozens of testimonies and filed four formal complaints with the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office.

In 2023, authorities closed Luján’s office and issued an initial arrest warrant against him. The doctor filed for an injunction to face the proceedings while free, which was granted under certain judicial conditions. However, upon failing to comply with these conditions, the judge reactivated the arrest warrant on December 20, 2024.
