Gerardo Sandoval Carrillo, a former candidate for mayor of Tlaltenango, was executed on the morning of Monday, September 28, 2026, inside a ranch he owned in the municipality of Santa María de la Paz, Zacatecas.
The killing was confirmed by the Secretary General of the Government of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, who announced that the Zacatecas State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) had taken charge of the investigation.
The state official affirmed the government’s commitment to apprehending those responsible and preventing impunity regarding acts that threaten the lives and safety of citizens.
Miguel Ángel Varela Pinedo, the mayor of Zacatecas, also commented on the incident, expressing regret over Sandoval Carrillo’s death and highlighting his professional and political career.
Gerardo Sandoval Carrillo was a lawyer by profession, as well as a merchant and rancher. During the 2021 election cycle, he ran for mayor of Tlaltenango representing a coalition formed by Morena, the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM), the Labor Party (PT), and New Alliance (Nueva Alianza).
Forensic experts and agents from the Zacatecas FGJE Investigative Police arrived at the crime scene to process the area, gather relevant evidence, and transport the body to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for statutory procedures.
