The United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, welcomed the Treasury Department’s sanction against Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), and four of his lieutenants, as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking.
On the other hand, the diplomat committed to the bilateral effort with the Mexican government to impact transnational criminal organizations for the benefit of society.
“We will continue working with our partners in Mexico to protect our people and curb the violence,” Johnson concluded.
The designation of El Mencho and his collaborators is part of the classification of several cartels, including the CJNG, as terrorist organizations, one of the first actions taken by the executive branch after taking office.
It was on the morning of Wednesday, June 18, that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated the cartel members under several anti-drug and anti-terrorist laws.
It also issued a series of financial sanctions against the individuals, blocking them from the U.S. financial system.
