For diplomatic relations with Ecuador to be resumed, there must be an apology from that country’s government for everything that happened, including the legal situation of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico, stated President Claudia Sheinbaum. “Have we already forgotten that you invaded the Mexican embassy? Have we already forgotten that you assaulted Mexican embassy personnel? Have we already forgotten that you detained a person who had asylum?”

When asked directly about the relationship with Ecuador, the president said that this apology is necessary because otherwise, the situation becomes very complicated. Regarding Ecuador’s signals of being able to resume diplomatic relations with Mexico, Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco stated during the press conference that a lawsuit filed by Mexico is currently underway before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for Ecuador’s violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and a set of rules governing international law.

Velasco asserted that Ecuador committed serious breaches of international law, which is why there are currently no channels of communication. “There cannot be any channels of communication,” he said, because basic principles were violated when they invaded the Mexican embassy, assaulted Mexican personnel, and detained a person who had been granted asylum.

He mentioned that the legal process is proceeding before the ICJ, where Ecuador has also filed a parallel lawsuit accusing Mexico of violating the rules regarding the granting of asylum. However, he noted that the Organization of American States (OAS) had already discussed the matter and ruled in Mexico’s favor.
