At 95 years old, sitting under the tent installed on the esplanade of the Benito Juárez mayor’s office, she began to move to the music of the salsa group that opened the day, dressed in the T-shirt of the Mexican National Team. There was no whistle, no goals, no full stadium. But she was already dancing.
She arrived invited by her granddaughter from Córdoba, Veracruz. The afternoon was just beginning and Mexico’s game against England had not yet started. Outside, the gray sky of Mexico City threatened to cool everything and the rain fell at times; Inside, nearly two thousand people took refuge under the tarp, occupying chairs in front of a giant screen with the calm of a city that stopped for a while to watch the game.
The group tried to light up the atmosphere, but the esplanade did not respond immediately. Many remained seated. Some young people were looking at their cell phones. Families opened cakes and hamburgers bought outside. The afternoon did not explode: it settled.
Then Elpidia moved again.
