The 2026 FIFA World Cup is drawing to a close, but there is still plenty to look forward to. Of course, the most important thing is who will win the championship—and the match taking place this Sunday at 3:00 PM (New York time) between finalists Spain and Argentina. But there is also the match itself and, above all, the many performances at the final, including that of Shakira, the queen of this competition. The Colombian star has been a hit all summer with “Dai Dai,” the Cup’s anthem—a song performed mostly in English alongside Nigerian rapper Burna Boy. Yet, fitting for the occasion, she is preparing a Spanish version of the anthem.
Shakira, born in Barranquilla 49 years ago, has become something of a lucky charm for the World Cup. In 2010, her now-iconic “Waka Waka” became a global, multilingual anthem and a song that catapulted her international career.
That was also the World Cup won by Spain—and the tournament where she met Gerard Piqué, who would later become the father of her two sons, Milan and Sasha. In 2014, at the World Cup in Brazil—where Germany defeated Argentina in the final—she once again turned the tournament’s theme into the song of the summer and an enduring hit: “La La La,” featuring Carlinhos Brown. She has done it again this summer with “Dai Dai,” which has racked up nearly 200 million streams on Spotify, while its official video has surpassed 440 million views on YouTube.
This summer’s song is packed with catchy, danceable rhythms and features words in various languages alongside phrases in Spanish (“Dale, no olvides lo que vales / Juega como tú sabes / Como tú sabes” / “Go on, don’t forget your worth / Play the way you know how / The way you know how”). However, until now, a Spanish version did not exist. With a final featuring two Spanish-speaking teams—and being a Spanish speaker herself—the singer has revealed in a video that she already has the song ready, and it seems likely she will release it in the coming days or hours.
