A wave of violence on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 8, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, resulted in multiple stolen vehicles and the vandalism and shooting attacks on homes and businesses across various neighborhoods of the municipality within a span of less than five hours; only property damage was reported.
The attacks began around 3:00 PM in the Rafael Buelna neighborhood, where a group of gunmen fired at the façade of a two-story residence on Ébano Street, opposite the Santa Cecilia church.
Around 5:00 PM, authorities responded to the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood following a report of an attack on a car wash on Benito Juárez Street; no fatalities or injuries were reported.
Subsequently, after 6:00 PM, four consecutive incidents occurred in different sectors of the Sinaloan capital:
Gustavo Díaz Ordaz neighborhood: Unidentified individuals fired at an occupied home at the corner of Rubén Martín and Constituyentes Matías Rodríguez streets and abandoned a vehicle at the scene that they had intended to use to ram down the entrance. The occupants were unharmed.
Rafael Buelna neighborhood: At the intersection of México 68 and Patria avenues, a muffler and radiator shop was rammed by a white Toyota—which had been reported stolen—when it was backed into the establishment’s gate.
Chapultepec neighborhood: A group of attackers attempted to ram down the gate of a property with a car; failing to do so, they set the vehicle on fire in the street.
Colinas de San Miguel neighborhood: A vehicle was intentionally crashed into a house and subsequently set on fire. Firefighters and rescue teams extinguished the flames to prevent the fire from spreading.
Additionally, gunmen attacked and attempted to set fire to the Motel del Río Suites in the Tres Ríos sector. The thugs made their way to one of the rooms, threw a fuel-based incendiary device inside, set it alight, and then fled the scene.
They failed to cause major damage to the building, as employees managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to other rooms.
The State Secretariat of Public Security (SSPE) confirmed three such incidents in a statement and issued a public alert advising people to avoid traveling through the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has taken charge of the investigation into the six damaged properties, overseeing the collection of evidence and the compilation of the corresponding case files.
