Ángel Aguirre Rivero, former governor of Guerrero, was arrested for his alleged role in concealing evidence regarding the disappearance of the 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers’ College in Ayotzinapa.
The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that the arrest was carried out as part of a new investigative model, which involved re-examining the actions taken at the time regarding the students’ disappearance.
These analyses established grounds to suspect the former governor’s involvement in concealing evidence that could have revealed the students’ whereabouts; consequently, an arrest warrant was issued against him.
Ángel Aguirre Rivero began his political career within the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1980 but later joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He assumed the governorship of Guerrero in 2011 but resigned from the post months before his term ended following the disappearance of the 43 students.
It is worth noting that Aguirre had previously publicly denied any connection to the destruction of evidence in the case—such as the alleged disappearance of recordings from the Iguala Courthouse.
In May 2025, following the arrest of Lambertina Galeana Marín—former president of the Guerrero Superior Court of Justice—the former governor issued a statement denying any responsibility for the events and declaring that he “never gave any instruction regarding the handling of said evidentiary material.”
