Mexico nightclub charges Americans

A nightclub in Mexico has sparked debate after announcing a higher cover charge for U.S. visitors. The viral protest taps into anger over Trump-era rhetoric, tourism pressure, and rising living costs affecting locals.

A nightclub in Mexico has gone viral on social media for charging American visitors an entry fee of up to 5,000 Mexican pesos—approximately $300—in response to the hostile rhetoric directed by Donald Trump toward Mexicans, and Hispanic migrants in general, since he first took office across both of his administrations.

According to reports, the bar—named Japan—announced on its social media channels that it would implement this cover charge policy while offering discounts to “those who need it most,” referring to local patrons and foreign tourists from countries other than the United States.

“Entry costs 5,000 pesos. (300dlls) U.S. citizens do not receive a discount,” the bar noted on its social media pages.

In addition, the establishment stated that tourists of any other nationality would receive discounts of up to 93 percent, while Mexicans and Latin Americans would receive a 95 percent discount.

“It’s not that we’re charging ‘gringos’ more; rather, we are offering discounts to those who need them,” the announcement points out. The post further adds that the money collected from each cover charge does not go to the establishment or its founder, but is instead distributed among the bar staff.

“Clarity helps us keep the party peaceful. See you this weekend to keep the ‘normal revolution’ going,” the announcement concludes.

The venue’s owner, Federico Crespo, gave an interview to *The Guardian* in which he stated that the measure aims to serve as a response to all those “years of insults directed at Mexico by the United States” and to Trump’s constant “attacks against the country.”

Beyond being merely a response to Trump and the U.S. nation regarding aggressions against Mexicans, the entry fee at Japan has also been interpreted as a reaction to the American “invasion” of Mexico and the gentrification that is currently reshaping the landscape of the country—displacing locals, driving up the cost of basic necessities such as rent, and even altering the linguistic environment. “It is a way to put that money into the hands of the people most affected by this problem: rising rents, the skyrocketing cost of living, and the need to travel greater distances to get to work. By giving the money raised from admission fees to the workers, we help them out a little,” noted the club’s owner.

After this bar’s initiative went viral, social media users began voicing their support for charging the 5,000-peso fee to foreigners—particularly Americans.

Internet users have been calling for this policy to extend beyond just Club Japan, urging other venues to implement similar fees and to distribute the proceeds to those most adversely affected by gentrification in Mexico City and other major international tourist destinations within the country, such as Cancún.

Furthermore, there have been calls for European visitors—as well as foreigners who have permanently settled in Mexico—to also be required to pay these fees for the benefit of Mexicans impacted by displacement or rising living costs.

“I love you, Japan. Long live class consciousness and racial solidarity!” “They show more class consciousness than most. I love that they are a true driving force for social change.” “If Japan stands against imperialism, then my heart stands with Japan.” “Japan, don’t let gentrification catch up to us!” commented various users on Instagram.
