Councilmember Eunisses Hernández has taken a major step in her bid for reelection in Los Angeles City Council District 1.

The progressive incumbent and frontrunner has secured the endorsement of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party—the largest local Democratic Party organization in the United States—reinforcing a broad, multiracial coalition rooted in working-class communities.

Hernández announced that she earned the backing of the influential party, which represents millions of voters across the region.

In what is expected to be a closely contested race, Hernández adds this endorsement to a growing list of supporters, including Democratic Socialists of America – Los Angeles, CHIRLA Action Fund, Sierra Club, California Women’s List, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, and numerous labor unions.

She has also received support from several prominent elected officials, including councilmembers Ysabel Jurado, Hugo Soto-Martínez, Nithya Raman, and Heather Hutt, as well as county supervisors Hilda Solis, Holly Mitchell, and Lindsey Horvath.

Five candidates are running in the June 2 primary for the District 1 City Council seat: Hernández, Lou Calanche, Sylvia Robledo, Nelson Grande, and Raúl Claros.

In interviews with Parriva, Robledo and Claros said they would be willing to unite with other candidates to oppose Hernández, arguing that new leadership is needed.

Today’s endorsement signals that Democrats in Los Angeles are rejecting misinformation and fear-based tactics, according to Hernandez.

“As the cost of living pushes working families to the brink, and fear, division, and outright lies are used to target and exploit our communities, Los Angeles Democrats are choosing a different path,” Hernández said. “I am proud to be part of a broad coalition rooted in humanity, affordability, truth, and democracy, and I’m honored to have the support of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party as we continue to build a coalition strong enough to defeat authoritarianism.”

“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party is proud to endorse Councilmember Eunisses Hernández for reelection,” said Mark Ramos, chair of the organization.

“As the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants and a former community organizer, she brings a worker-centered, labor-driven perspective that has delivered real results for the people of District 1 and all of Los Angeles. As Donald Trump and his allies launch coordinated attacks on immigrants, working families, and our democracy itself, we need leaders who will not back down or remain silent. Eunisses has shown she is willing to stand up, speak out, and unapologetically fight for all Angelenos, regardless of their status or income. She is exactly the kind of bold leader Los Angeles needs in this moment, and we are proud to endorse her.”
