Five alleged members of the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs were expelled from Mexico after being found in the country illegally.
Guatemala’s National Civil Police (PNC) reported on Saturday that the operation was carried out in coordination with Mexican authorities, who expelled the five men—alleged members of Salvadoran gangs—so they could be detained by authorities in their home country, El Salvador.
Investigators from the Anti-Narcotics Police Division (DIPANDA) received the five individuals at the El Carmen border crossing in Malacatán, San Marcos. From there, they were transported under police custody to the San Cristóbal border crossing in Jutiapa, where they are to be handed over to Salvadoran authorities for the appropriate legal proceedings.
The first of the men was identified as Remberto Ismael “C,” 37, alias “Little Man,” who has a criminal record for illicit association and attempted aggravated extortion.
