One of the most severe attacks by armed civilians against personnel from the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) took place on the afternoon of Friday, July 3, in the municipality of Mazatlán, Sinaloa. The incident resulted in the death of one naval officer and injuries to three others.
The attack occurred near the Picachos Dam, close to the community of San Marcos. Initial reports suggested the incident took place while the Navy was escorting “searching mothers” from the collective *Por las Voces sin Justicia A.C.*
However, security sources denied that such an escort was taking place, stating instead that the naval unit was merely conducting preventive operations in the area when they came under attack.
Meanwhile, the collective itself rejected the initial claims, stating that they were conducting search operations in Escamillas when they heard the gunfire directed at the Navy personnel, prompting them to take cover.
The naval unit was actually conducting surveys of rivers and dams to assess potential risks and warn the public in the event of rising water levels due to the rainy season.
