Today, in a press conference, Mexican head coach Javier Aguirre made his final statements ahead of the Mexican National Team’s debut against South Africa—the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The 2026 World Cup opener will take place this Thursday, June 11, at Mexico City Stadium, kicking off at 1:00 PM (Central Mexico Time). Below are the highlights of Javier Aguirre’s comments prior to the National Team’s World Cup debut:
“In my 50 years in football, I’ve never experienced an emotion quite like a home World Cup; it’s something unforgettable. Those who weren’t born in 1986 will find out tomorrow [Thursday] what it means.”
“The group has bonded like a family, and the team is in good physical and mental shape; anyone could play. I haven’t discussed the starting lineup with them yet—all 26 players are excited and know that their turn could come at any moment.”
“Having 26 players gives me a range of options to cover positions without difficulty; there isn’t a single spot where we’re struggling. I have full confidence in all of them; each has their own characteristics, and in my view, any of them could play.”
“The stage is set for us to play a great match. There are no small opponents; we respect them. We have to beat them; the team has grown, and everything is in place for us to have a successful World Cup.”
“We’ve studied South Africa thoroughly; we know how they play, and it’s unlikely they’ll surprise us with anything. Tactically—on paper, at least—we’ve analyzed them inside out. The other factor is the condition of my players, but that doesn’t keep me up at night; I’m very calm about whoever ends up starting.”
