The mother of Genry Ruiz Guillén, a Honduran immigrant who died at the Krome Detention Center in ICE custody, said the family received no information or assistance until they were notified of his death.
The woman expressed her deep sorrow for the loss of her son exclusively to Univision.
In an emotional statement, she asserted that the suffering she carries within her “cannot be measured.”
Genry Ruiz Guillén, who had arrived in the United States in 2023 after crossing the border, worked in construction. However, in October 2024, he was arrested for an incident related to domestic violence, which led to his transfer to the Krome Detention Center in South Florida.
In December 2024, Ruiz Guillén’s mother received a call from her son from the detention center. It was the last time she communicated with him.
On that occasion, he informed her that he wasn’t feeling well and was fainting.
“He told me three times that he was fainting, and after that, I didn’t communicate with him again,” the mother recounted, her voice breaking.
After that call, the woman heard no more from her son, which led her to make a desperate decision: to travel to the detention center in search of information. However, her efforts were in vain, as she was not provided with any information about her son.
It wasn’t until February 24th that the mother received the devastating news: her son had died. In her words, she never imagined something like this could happen.
“I never thought my son would come to this country to die like this, nor did I ever think they would give me that news,” she said, visibly shaken.
