For “the enormous quality of his graphic work and the original visual exploration of his illustrations, as well as the breadth of a symbolic universe rooted in the popular, with archetypal references reinterpreted in a poetic way,” Mexican illustrator Armando Fonseca has been chosen as the winner of the 16th Ibero-American Illustrated Catalog, awarded by the SM Foundation in collaboration with the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). The prize, which includes five thousand dollars, as well as the opportunity to design the catalog cover and have a space to exhibit his work at the FIL Guadalajara, will be presented at a ceremony scheduled for Sunday, November 30, at Expo Guadalajara.
The jury was composed of Carolina Rey, Isabella Del Monte, Andrea Fuentes Silva, Paulina Márquez, and Pep Carrió. In addition to announcing the winner, they also awarded special mentions to artists María José de Telleria (Argentina), Saioa Aginako Lamarain (Spain), Paula Bustamante (Chile), and Rocío Katz (Argentina). They also selected 44 illustrators who will be included in the 16th Iberoamérica Ilustra Catalogue. These include Pablo Álvarez, Maria Cecilia Codoni, and Lui Mort from Argentina; David Álvarez and Luis Miguel San Vicente Oliveros from Mexico; Mariana Massarani from Brazil; and Ana Pez from Spain, among others.
Established as one of the main platforms for highlighting graphic talent in the region, the Iberoamérica Ilustra Catalogue seeks to promote excellence and diversity in Ibero-American illustration. In this edition, the competition brought together 682 works from illustrators from 19 countries. Mexico had a prominent presence, as in addition to being represented by Armando Fonseca with the first prize, it is the leader with the selection of ten illustrators, who will be included in the catalog.
Armando Fonseca (Mexico City, 1989) studied philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Since 2014, he has collaborated as an illustrator in magazines and books, and taught drawing and illustration workshops. His work has been recognized by the International Book Organization for Young People (IBBY), the Book Bank of Venezuela, the White Ravens Catalog, the Bratislava Illustration Biennial, and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. His images have participated in illustration exhibitions in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, France, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, China, Korea, and Japan.
The announcement of the 16th Iberoamérica Ilustra Catalog award was made through a press release on the Iberoamérica Ilustra website. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 30th, during the 39th edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, with Barcelona as Guest of Honor.
