Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano—a three-time presidential candidate and son of former President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río—passed away this Wednesday at the age of 92.

A native of Mexico City, he was a former member of the PRI and a founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He was born on May 1, 1934.

He ran for president in 1988, 1994, and 2000. In those elections, he finished behind PRI candidates Carlos Salinas de Gortari and Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León, as well as Vicente Fox Quesada.

He served as governor of Michoacán from 1980 to 1986, as Head of Government of the Federal District from 1997 to 1999, and as coordinator of international affairs for the Mexico City government from 2012 to 2018.

In 2014, he resigned from the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a political force he had helped found.

In March 2016, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) announced the creation of the Petroleum Advisory Commission, with the position of chair reserved for Cárdenas Solórzano.

According to national media outlets, Cárdenas Solórzano passed away this Wednesday night.
