On Thursday, September 24, Carlota ‘N”s family will once again open the door to the Chalco home that was at the center of the tragedy on April 1, 2025.
A trial judge based in Texcoco ordered the restitution of the property—located in the Exhacienda de Guadalupe housing complex in Candelaria Tlapala—after recognizing Mariana Santana Alfaro, Carlota’s daughter, as the legitimate owner.
The ruling was issued after ownership was verified via a public deed.
The family will still find some belongings and furniture left behind by those who had occupied the home. They will also need to carry out maintenance work, including changing the locks, waterproofing, and clearing away overgrown vegetation.
From a disputed house to a court-ordered restitution
The property had already been occupied by squatters prior to the events of April 1, 2025—the day Carlota, then 74 years old, went to the home accompanied by her children.
The confrontation ended with the deaths of 19-year-old Justin Márquez and 51-year-old Esaú Márquez, as well as the injury of a teenager.
Carlota and her children, Mariana ‘N’ and Eduardo ‘N’, are currently facing criminal proceedings for aggravated homicide and attempted aggravated homicide.
The intermediate hearing has been rescheduled for October 1.
For Arturo Santana, the judicial recognition of ownership also represents a factor that, from the defense’s perspective, must be considered within the criminal proceedings.
