The Mexican National Team competing in the 2026 World Cup has a very marked generational difference. On one hand, there’s a young player like Gilberto Mora, who at just 17 years old is attracting the attention of foreign clubs; on the other, El Tri has goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who at 40 years old is seen as a fundamental guide of experience within the team. These evident contrasts have generated a fun trend on social media called “Don Memo.”
Why do they call Guillermo Ochoa “Don Memo”?
The marked age difference between Ochoa and Gilberto Mora has inspired countless videos on social media, where the Xolos de Tijuana player refers to the legendary goalkeeper of the Mexican National Team as “Don Memo.”
In Mexico, it is common custom to formally and respectfully address elderly or highly respected people with the prefix “Don.” In this case, Guillermo Ochoa has both characteristics: he is celebrating his 40th birthday and, in addition, boasts the historic milestone of having been called up to six World Cups.
