The United States Embassy in Mexico issued a warning on Wednesday to its citizens regarding the risks associated with consuming adulterated alcoholic beverages in various parts of the country—particularly at bars, large-scale events, and celebrations—where tourists are often targeted by criminals.
In a message shared on social media, the diplomatic mission noted that drink adulteration is a known issue in certain regions of Mexico. It advised travelers not to leave their drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers. It also recommended exercising extra caution at night, especially in city centers, and traveling in groups.
The warning comes against the backdrop of the FIFA World Cup, which began on June 11 and has drawn thousands of international visitors to various host cities across the country.
The message was released just days after four people died and dozens more suffered from poisoning during a *quinceañera* celebration in Salamanca, Guanajuato. According to local authorities, the illnesses were linked to the consumption of allegedly adulterated drinks.
The embassy noted that U.S. citizens have fallen victim to various crimes in both tourist destinations and other locations throughout the country, and urged travelers to consult the travel and safety advisories issued by the State Department.
