The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana issued a security alert for Mexicali, Baja California, on Monday night and suspended all staff activities in the border city for Tuesday, August 25, following reports of a possible threat of unspecified nature.
The alert, issued via the U.S. Mission to Mexico, instructs U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Mexicali to stay away from government buildings throughout the day. The notice is direct: “Due to information regarding a threat, U.S. government activities in Mexicali, as well as travel to the city, have been suspended for August 25.” The warning does not identify the potential perpetrator nor specify the type of incident that might occur.
As of press time, no Mexican state or municipal agency had issued a statement regarding security conditions in the city or the nature of the threat cited by the U.S. government.
The alert outlines a series of preventive measures for U.S. citizens in Mexicali. The U.S. government advises them to avoid government buildings, seek shelter should an incident occur, inform family and friends of their status, and follow the instructions of Mexican law enforcement authorities at all times.
