Javier Saldaña Almazán, the rector of the Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro)—currently on leave—condemned the murder of three of his family members in the community of Kilómetro 21, in the municipality of Acapulco. He demanded that authorities conduct a comprehensive investigation to solve the crime and apprehend those responsible.

The victims were identified as Josefina Saldaña Parra, the academic’s aunt; Janet Magnolia Gutiérrez, his cousin; and Édgar de la Cruz Solorio, the latter’s husband. All three were found dead inside a home on the morning of Monday, June 29.

In a statement released via social media, Saldaña Almazán expressed his grief over the incident and called for the case not to go unpunished.

“With deep sorrow and indignation, I condemn the cowardly acts that took place this Monday, June 29,” wrote the rector, while also sending a message of solidarity to his relatives, particularly his uncles Silvestre and Esteban Saldaña.
