President Claudia Sheinbaum will submit a constitutional reform bill to the Congress of the Union this afternoon requiring anyone aspiring to run for president, governor, or Head of Government to renounce any other nationality they may hold. The aim is to ensure that individuals holding these offices are exclusively Mexican.
She stated that the Constitution currently does not make this situation sufficiently clear, making it necessary to make the requirement explicit, given that there are even incumbent governors who hold another nationality. The goal is to guarantee that the paramount interest of the president or a governor is Mexico, rather than any other country.
“That is what we are proposing: that once they register to run for president or governor, they must renounce any other citizenship to ensure that the nation’s interest takes precedence over any other interest,” Sheinbaum asserted.

—It is very difficult to be a candidate and launch a campaign from another country, Sheinbaum replied.
During the press conference, the president added that “a governor with dual nationality has two sets of interests; they are a citizen of two different nations. Given this status, it is not clear that the paramount interest is the national interest. In light of past instances of foreign interference, it is essential that they be Mexican.”
