The disappearance of Rosa Esbeidi Lorenzo Luna—a 12-year-old girl identified by her relatives as “Rosita”—has kept alert systems active throughout Mexico City.

On Thursday morning, relatives and neighbors in the Venustiano Carranza borough staged demonstrations and road blockades to demand the whereabouts of the minor, who has been missing since April 19, when she went to visit a friend but failed to return home. The case has galvanized the community and compelled authorities to maintain an active Amber Alert, disseminating a missing person bulletin and requesting public assistance to expedite her recovery.

As four days passed with no news regarding Rosita’s whereabouts, neighbors and loved ones blocked traffic at the intersection of Periférico Oriente and Avenida Bordo de Xochiaca starting in the early hours of Thursday, April 23.

The blockade affects one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, placing the case at the center of public attention in the capital’s eastern sector. The demonstration began with a march that set out from the Victoriano González Garzón Elementary School and culminated in the closure of the Periférico. The objective of the protest is to pressure authorities to intensify the search and to raise awareness regarding the minor’s disappearance, given the scant progress reported thus far.
