Mazatlan residents waited for a tsunami that never arrived after the earthquake in Russia

On the night of Tuesday, July 29th, and early Wednesday, July 30th, the Mazatlan seawall was filled with local citizens and tourists, who decided to ignore the preventive tsunami alert issued by the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

Despite the CNPC issuing a clear warning for the population to stay away from beaches and coastal areas due to the risk of a possible rise in sea level and the arrival of waves of up to one meter in several regions of the Mexican Pacific, hundreds of people gathered on the iconic seawall to observe the sea.

The alert indicated that the phenomenon could begin to manifest itself as early as 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30th, with the possibility of sudden currents and unusual changes in sea level that could endanger the safety and lives of those on the coastline.

In images and videos shared on social media, dozens of people were seen enjoying the evening, including entire families and groups of friends, occupying the spaces along the boardwalk, sitting, walking, and chatting relaxedly with banda music in the background.
