Hours before her death, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas shared a photograph of the bridge from which she was about to jump and wrote a phrase that, after the tragedy, took on an unexpected meaning: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” Shortly afterward, the 21-year-old Brazilian woman fell to her death during a bungee jumping activity in the state of São Paulo after being launched without a safety harness.

The accident occurred on Saturday at the well-known Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge), in the city of Limeira, a popular spot for adventure activities and extreme sports. According to initial investigations, the organizers authorized the jump without the main safety system being properly connected to the participant’s harness.

Maria Eduarda lived in Jandira, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, and worked as a physical education teacher. She also had a background in Sports Management and had built a life connected to sports, physical activity, and wellness.

On her social media, she frequently shared images of training sessions, outdoor activities, and moments in nature. Those who knew her described her as an active young woman, passionate about sporting challenges and committed to promoting healthy habits.

The tragedy was captured on video, which quickly went viral on social media. The footage shows the young woman being held by several men on the launch platform before being propelled into the void. Just seconds later, those present began to scream upon realizing that the safety rope was not in place.

According to testimonies gathered by authorities, the countdown proceeded normally, and no one noticed the absence of the safety system in time. By the time those present realized what had happened, Maria Eduarda was already in freefall from a height of between 30 and 40 meters, according to various estimates reported by Brazilian media.

Following the accident, members of the organization and others present attempted to assist her while waiting for emergency services to arrive. Firefighters and paramedics from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) quickly reached the scene, but paramedics could only confirm her death due to the severity of her injuries.

Among those present was the young woman’s fiancé, who suffered a medical episode after witnessing the aftermath of the accident and required medical attention.
