The Judiciary of Zacatecas is in mourning following the passing of Magistrate Oyuki Ramírez Burciaga, who lost her life this Tuesday, May 12, due to complications stemming from a massive bee attack. Her death occurred days after the official performed a heroic act to save the life and safety of her three-year-old son.
The incident took place on May 3 at the Guadalupe Sports Complex, where a swarm of bees launched a surprise attack on those in attendance. Upon realizing the danger, the magistrate did not hesitate to take off her sweatshirt to completely wrap up her young son, leaving herself unprotected and exposed to the stings.
Witnesses to the incident recounted that, after securing her son and ensuring he was safe with his father, Ramírez Burciaga ran outside the facility in search of help. Although fire department personnel were present at the scene, they lacked the necessary protective gear to intervene immediately.
In an act of desperation, the magistrate chased down a departing Civil Protection vehicle—which was leaving to seek reinforcements—and made multiple phone calls to request medical assistance. Throughout this entire ordeal, and despite being stung repeatedly, she prioritized the well-being of her family members over her own safety.
Although she was admitted to the hospital conscious—along with six other injured individuals—Oyuki Ramírez’s health deteriorated drastically over the ensuing hours. The severity of her allergic reactions and the toxins from the stings caused severe swelling in various organs, including her brain, forcing doctors to intubate her.
After a week-long, intense battle in the intensive care unit, medical efforts ultimately proved insufficient. The legal community and the society of Zacatecas have expressed their profound consternation at the loss of the magistrate, whose final act was a sacrifice of love to ensure her son’s life.
