Lucía Guadalupe Mora Ávalos, the municipal coordinator for the Morena party in Valle de Allende, Chihuahua, was murdered on Tuesday night following an armed attack that took place in the municipality’s Nicolás Fernández neighborhood.
According to initial reports, Mora Ávalos was traveling in a blue Honda HR-V SUV, accompanied by her husband, when armed individuals opened fire on the vehicle just as she was attempting to exit it.
The Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed to local media the identity of the victim—a 53-year-old woman known in the region by the nickname “Pina,” who also worked as a preschool teacher.
The FGE added that personnel from the State Investigation Agency responded to a report regarding a homicide on Benito Juárez Street, noting that the victim “sustained gunshot wounds to various parts of her body.”
Media reports indicate that the victim’s husband, Manuel Bailón Cereceres, was wounded during the attack and was transported to a regional hospital for treatment; no further details regarding his condition are available at this time.
The FGE has opened an investigation file and stated that the inquiry is being conducted with a gender perspective. Agents from the State Investigation Agency and personnel from Forensic Services arrived at the scene, where they recovered shell casings of various calibers. The body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service, where a mandatory autopsy will be performed.
Authorities have launched a search operation at the municipality’s exit routes and in nearby areas in an effort to locate those responsible. As of now, there are no reports of any arrests.
