Kevin González, an 18-year-old with stage IV metastatic colon cancer, died this Sunday, May 10, after reuniting on May 9 with his parents—Isidoro González Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya—who had been deported from the United States but were granted special authorization by a federal judge in Arizona to return, according to Telemundo.
The family reunion took place on Saturday around 3:30 p.m. at the home of his maternal grandmother, to which Kevin González had traveled from Chicago, his hometown. His medical condition was critical: he was no longer eating or drinking and had ceased responding to all medical treatment.
After doctors informed the family that the young man’s condition was not improving, his parents requested humanitarian permits to enter the United States and be by their son’s side, Virginia Amaya, his maternal grandmother, told Telemundo Chicago.
U.S. authorities denied the requests, prompting Kevin’s parents to cross the border in an urgent attempt to reunite with him before his passing. Jovany Ramírez, the young man’s brother, had been caring for him in Chicago following his diagnosis in January, while his parents had been residing in Mexico since their deportation years earlier.
After 25 days in ICE detention and their subsequent deportation to Mexico, Isidoro González and Anabel Ramírez finally managed to reunite with their son, Kevin González, on May 9 in Durango, following a road trip of more than 16 hours from Hermosillo, Sonora.
