José Alfredo García Gutiérrez, the municipal liaison for the “Movimiento Independiente del Sombrero” (Independent Hat Movement), was executed this Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Tijuana, Baja California, after arriving to help his nephew, who was allegedly the victim of extortion.
The homicide was confirmed by the sociopolitical organization itself in an official statement, in which they detailed that the activist lost his life after intervening to protect his relative.
Days before his murder, García Gutiérrez had actively participated in public protests in Baja California, demanding an end to violence and commemorating the anniversary of the death of Carlos Manzo, the movement’s founder.
Members of the “Movimiento Independiente del Sombrero” in Baja California strongly condemned the killing of their representative in Tijuana, describing it as a severe blow to the organization.
Furthermore, they demanded that the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) conduct a serious, transparent, and exhaustive investigation to identify and apprehend both the perpetrators and those who ordered the crime, ensuring that the case does not go unpunished.
In their statement, his fellow members expressed their solidarity with the wife, children, and other relatives of José Alfredo García Gutiérrez, whom they recognized as a citizen deeply committed to social causes and to advocating for better security conditions for families in Tijuana, Baja California.
