Five thousand 445 7.62 × 39 millimeter caliber cartridges—used for AK-47 rifles and variants—were hidden under the seat of a Jeep Wrangler when Yanet “N” was detained last Friday in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, a few meters from the border bridge with Arizona.
The woman, of American nationality, is identified as an alleged logistics operator for Los Mayos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel headed by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, “El Mayito Flaco.” The capture occurred during surveillance tours in the vicinity of the bridge that connects San Luis Río Colorado with San Luis, Arizona.
The New York Post identified the detainee as Yanet Dowden, 22, and reported that, in addition to the cartridges, firearms were located during the search, including an AK-47. The American media attributed to the Mexican authorities the version that Dowden had performed logistics functions for Los Mayos.
Among his belongings also appeared an identification apparently issued by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reintegration, in the name of Yanet Dowden, with the name “Level II correctional officer.” However, until the closing of this information note, this document does not allow us to establish by itself that he held a current position in the institution.
The location of the capture and the amount of ammunition seized place the case on a border corridor in which there is already a history of attempts to take weapons and cartridges from Arizona to Mexico.
