Gerardo Rincón Flores, the lawyer representing Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in Mexico, denied the authenticity of letters sent to the Brooklyn court in recent weeks on Tuesday, just as four new letters were released in which the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel claims his innocence and asks to be returned to Mexico.

“I can tell you they’re fake, I can assure you, because I know how he signs, I know how he writes,” Rincón Flores stated in an interview with Adela Micha.

The four most recent letters, dated between May 11 and 15 and filed with the court on May 19, 2026, were revealed by journalist Keegan Hamilton on social media. In the letters, the alleged sender describes himself as “an innocent citizen of Mexico whose foreign policy rights under U.S. law have been violated” and requests a new trial, the activation of an extradition clause to return to Mexico, and permission to receive visits from his twin daughters.

The documents were addressed to judges, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the man the alleged author refers to as the “governor of Brooklyn,” confusing the position with that of mayor.

This wave of letters began in April 2026 from the ADX Florence supermax prison in Colorado, where Guzmán Loera has been serving a life sentence since 2019.
