As investigations continue into the suspected poisoning of several people following a party in the community of Puerto de Valle, specialists have warned that consuming tainted alcohol can cause irreversible damage and even death, even if only a minimal amount is ingested.
Yunnúe Guía Calderón, a member of the Salamanca Medical Association, explained that one of the major risks is that early symptoms are often mistaken for a common hangover, which delays medical attention and increases the likelihood of serious complications.
“Methanol is a toxic substance used in antifreeze and solvents. It is prohibited for human consumption, and when ingested, it transforms into substances that are highly harmful to the body,” she noted.
The specialist explained that methanol can cause severe damage to organs such as the liver and the nervous system. Among the most serious consequences are permanent blindness, pancreatitis, liver failure, and death.
Although many people believe the danger depends on consuming large quantities of alcohol, the specialist emphasized that even small doses can cause significant harm. Furthermore, symptoms do not always appear immediately; they may manifest between 24 and 48 hours after the drink was consumed.
Early warning signs include stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and general malaise. However, as the poisoning progresses, more severe complications may arise, such as yellowing of the skin, bleeding, seizures, and neurological problems.
“It often appears that the person simply has a hangover, but in reality, damage to the liver or pancreas is already developing,” she warned.
Given the concern surrounding the cases reported in Puerto de Valle, the specialist recommended that anyone who consumed beverages at the event and exhibits any symptoms seek medical attention immediately, regardless of whether they believe the amount ingested was minimal.
